CD/SACD/DVD/Minidisc Players:: Marantz CD6004 Ungradeable?  CD6004 Vs. CD63MkIISE-KI Sig.?
Hi

I'm after opinions as to whether to go for a CD6004 or a CD63MkIISE-Ki Sig. (second hand).

Also, is the CD6004 upgradeable?

If it is, what kind of stuff can be done, and is this player as upgradeable as the CD63 and similar players form the 1990s.

I've been out of touch with equipment for a few years, so any help would be very much appreciated.

Regards

C.

General Hi-Fi Discussion:: Wifi streaming, network archive, computer connectivity
I am very new to streaming music and am coming round to see the benefits. I have started talking to retailers and am being advised to get a sonos box with a bridge which will enable me to connect to my MAC, stream music directly from the internet or my MAC and interface with an ipad (to use as music browser). I have a network with 1.3mb bandwidth and wondered how easy it is to set up such a system and how effective they are. I already have a new amp, cd player and speakers and now simply want to access more music.

Amplifiers/Receivers:: Harsh sound
Hi everybody,I have a budget system consisting of Arcam alpha 7se cd player,Pioneer A400 amp and Quad 11L speakers. Also a seldom used rega planer turntable. Problem is the sound is too harsh for my ears and I have been told the amp is the probable cause so I am looking to replace it on a fairly limited budget of around £350 max. I am considering a second hand amp and a friend has suggested a Cyrus but would it be better to go for something like a new Marantz.Any suggestions would be welcome.

General Discussion:: Help from audiophiles
59
Male
Manchester England
Yes.
A Thorens TD160S record deck
A rega RB300 tone arm
A ortofon Vivo blue cartridge
A Musical Fidelity Xlp Phono amp
A Pioneer pd703 cd player
A Pioneer f401L tuner
a Cyrus 8xpd intergrated amp
A pair of Spendor A6e Speakers
The electronics is interconnected by Chord cables
The speakers are connected by Cyrus loudspeaker wire which is really dmn

Massive amounts I do not have

This is the clever bit. I have two, two tier shelves. One in the lounge one in the hall. They are attached by the same bolts running through the adjoining wall. In the lounge is the amp and speakers while in the hal resides the record deck.
This keeps the deck away from the vibrations eminating from the speakers. The CD is also in the hall. It also keeps the Interconnects relatively short.
The lounge is dedicated to the Hi Fi. The TV is in an alcove in an entirely different part of the lounge. There are House plants around the Hi Fi which adds to the room.
Nearly forgaot the light system consists of three triangles of sheet wood which contain the light fittings. This allows there to be more light from fewer watts. it also adds something to the music as it operates in a manner to prevent the echos we once experienced. The wife thought it mad. Now I think she is pleased we do not live in the normal sterility of others.
All the time. Have you seen whats on the TV? Every day. I alone use it though my Grand children do rather occupy it when they are here as they are not allowed music in their home. My three year old loves real rock and roll, as does her Grand dad!
My music comes from my youth as it is, was and will always be the best period. Imagine seeing Red Card followed by The Outlaws followed by Little Feat followed by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band followed by The Who!!!!!
I dont play any classics or band music or dross, Just sixties and seventies Rock and a little Sun Rock and Roll.

Seperates are so one can sample each before purchase. I love my system I cannot afford to change it, but I dont need to. I may add a new phono amp as I am thinking of changing some of the components in the Musical Fidelity.
What we need to focus on is the music, not the system. So I use all my components daily.

Turntables & Vinyl:: Output plugs on turntable
While 1992 would appear a long time ago, in Hi Fi terms its just around the corner.
Dont worry about the fact the deck will not switch on. This would be easy for an electrician to make good.
As for the output plugs, the odd one is for the earth. Earthing record decks is an absolute mine field The other two bring the output fromm the cartridge.
The main means by which you can upgrade your system as far as the deck is concerned is to put some crsdible interconnect cables between the deck and the amp. You could also replace the cartridge as it must be pretty knackered now. My choice here is a Goldring preferably a 1042 which is expensive but is easily the best moving magnet cartridge.
This would mean a substantial out lay. Beyond this I would follow the instructions of a song and get more mileage from a new pair of sneakers as Hi Fi is a hole into which you can pour fantastic amounts of money which would be better spent on records
I do hope is will be of help to you

Advice on Turntable and Denon D-M38 [by markp27]

Turntables & Vinyl:: Advice on Turntable and Denon D-M38
Hi Guys,

After years of listening to music via mp3/CD and poor quality HiFi systems, I decided to take the plunge and buy myself a reasonable HiFi system and would also really like a turntable to go with it.

For the HiFi system I've decided on the Denon D-M38, not too an expensive system, but the reviews seem quite good.

I was wondering if this would be a good system to attach a turntable to? I've read that the Rega RP 1 is a good turntable to get.

Do you think that this would be a reasonable setup?

I certainly want to hear the warmth and quality which analogue music gives and don't want to be wasting money on a component which won't match well with the whole system.

Is the M38 good enough, or would I be better to go for a good amp + speaker combination (at a price of upto 500 quid) to be able to get the best from the turntable.

The room where I play my music is about 18 feet by 12 feet.

Many thanks, Mark.

Personally I would look at buying second had, some of the powerful 1970's monster receivers can be picked up cheap from online auctions, they are usually harder to kill than the modern stuff as well!

Amplifiers/Receivers:: Amp purchase
What is the "ancient amp" that you are considering replacing depending on it's quality and/or condition it may not be possible to purchase something that sounds as good on your budget?

Whether the amp will support your two pairs of speakers will depend on the wattage and impedance of the speakers, if your pairs of speakers are both the same wattage and have an impedance of 8ohms or above the chances are you could run them of one amplifier. If they are different wattages or less than 8ohm impedance I wouldn't advise it.
Another thing to consider is the length of cable between the amplifier and the speakers (shorter = better as a general rule)
