Sorry - been away a while....

the album I bought was '40 Degrees North'. It's very laid back - laconic (man)

Rega P3 24 with standard cartridge for now, update later
Would be my own choice but your list is fine in general.
I would add my agreement that the Technics SL-1210 is also a good spinner and worth a listen

New Members/Introductions:: Marantz PM 4001 amplifier
Have you tried fully disconnecting it from the mains ?
I would turn it of and disconnect it from the mains over night and then try it.
I can not find any info on the net of other people having encounted your problem with your amp.
If over night full disconnection does not work, then I am afraid you may have a fault in the amp caused by the overload.
I would contact Marantz direct and ask them if there is internal switch (not common) or for any info they can give you on the possible fault. Before I took it for repair.
Did you get the whole system from one dealer ?

New Members/Introductions:: Your assistance please....
Done a few things since my last post, have bought Marantz PM6002 Amp & Marantz CD6002 CD Player, this succeeded in improving things but I still felt that the sound coming from my stereo seriously lacked treble so I have removed the tweeters from my P4's and connected the cables that went to them from the crossover into a pair of Ariston MX-03 speakers I got for £10, these have a tweeter and a 10cm midrange speaker, this has completely transformed the whole sound, bringing everything to life, there now being much more treble. I think that the higher frequenicies of vocals where not catered for by either the B&W Driver or the B&W Tweeter. I don't really understand why the use of the extra speakers has increased the treble volume, can someone clever explain this to me? I think that the sensitivity of the Ariston speakers is 87Db where as the B&W are 88Db but this figure wouldn't relate much to the tweeter, would it? Thanks.

Loudspeakers:: should floorstanders be coupled or decoupled?
If you've got a concrete floor, coupling with spikes can work well. If you're on a suspended wooden floor, then you may want to consider decoupling with something like Auralex PlatFoam.

It's also speaker dependent though...!
